NEP 2020 Regulations · w.e.f. Academic Session 2025–26

The following eligibility norms are prescribed by West Bengal State University (WBSU) under its Undergraduate Programmes Regulations 2025, framed in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes (CCFUP). These regulations apply to all admissions from the academic session 2025–26 onwards.

1

Eligibility for Admission in UG Programmes

A candidate who has passed the Higher Secondary (10+2) examination or its equivalent is eligible to seek admission to the First Semester of the following undergraduate programmes, provided he/she had English as a subject at the Higher Secondary or equivalent level:

4-Year Programme

B.A. / B.Sc. / B.Com. / BBA (Honours)

8 Semesters · 180 Credits. Single Major in Arts / Science / Commerce / Management. Option to exit with Honours or continue with Research in the 4th year.

3-Year Programme

Multidisciplinary Programme (MDP)

6 Semesters · 128 Credits. Choice of three disciplines from one or two broad categories — Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, Commerce & Management.

Time-Lapse Restriction

No candidate shall be admitted to the Honours course after a lapse of more than 3 years from the year of passing the previous qualifying examination. Prior permission from the University is required beyond this period.

For the 3-year Multidisciplinary Programme, the maximum permissible lapse is 6 years. The year of admission is not counted; only the gap from the year of passing the qualifying examination is considered.

How Are Aggregate Marks Calculated?

For the 4-Year Honours Course: Aggregate marks are calculated by adding the marks of the top four disciplines in order of marks secured. Marks in compulsory Environmental Education/Studies are excluded from aggregate calculation. However, if Environmental Science was taken as an elective discipline, it may be counted.

For the 3-Year Multidisciplinary Programme: The same principle applies — aggregate is based on the top four disciplines by marks, excluding compulsory Environmental Education/Studies (unless studied as an elective).

2

Eligibility Criteria — Minimum Marks for Admission

A candidate seeking admission to the Honours programme in a discipline must satisfy any one of the following three criteria:

Candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe categories must have obtained a minimum of 40% in aggregate and 40% in the discipline / related discipline at the previous qualifying examination (10+2 level) to be eligible for the Honours programme.

Principal's Discretionary Power

If, in any Honours discipline, the number of applications is so low that even the permitted intake capacity of the college cannot be filled, the Principal / Teacher-in-Charge may exercise discretionary power to relax the minimum eligibility criteria for admission in that discipline. A written communication in this regard must be forwarded to the Registrar of the University for consideration and final approval by the Vice Chancellor.

3

Candidates from Other Boards

Students who have passed an examination equivalent to the Higher Secondary (10+2) from All-India Boards/Councils or State Boards/Councils — including Open Schools — are eligible for admission. Students from vocational studies are eligible for admission in the Multidisciplinary Programme at the UG level.

Students who have passed the Higher Secondary (10+2) examination or its equivalent from CBSE, ISC, or the National Institute of Open Schooling are not required to submit the Migration Certificate for registration under this University.

In case of any ambiguity regarding the acceptability of a particular examination as equivalent to the 10+2 level, the matter shall be referred to the Equivalence Committee of the University, or the Executive Council in its absence, for final determination.
